I haven’t liked 2nd hand furniture or second hand garments.
I do not wish to wear something that somebody already wore.
As for 2nd hand furniture, I like my place to be well embellished with new, glossy things. I don’t desire some worn, weathered couch in my living room.
One thing I’ve always liked used is books. I can’t get too much of used bookstores, and visit them whenever I am getting the possibility.
Some of my mates would consider these to be 2nd hand books, but I consider them antiques. What’s great about 2nd hand book stores is that you can find fascinating reads that are long out of print. Publishing choices are not based mostly on the standard of book but on the facility to sell. I have found some dazzling 2nd hand books in my time.
I found, as an example, an illustrated Encyclopedia of the traditional world from the turn of the century. It was entrancing as it detailed the present perspectives of science at the time, perspectives which now we see as old fashioned and superseded, but which back then were the cutting edge. The best used books could be a window into the past, enabling us to see the way people saw themselves and their world at a certain time. Another great thing about 2nd hand books is they make such great decorative additions to your home. I know this is shallow of me, but in my living room the books don’t serve just as scholastic function. I like folk to grasp that I am clever and well read, and having a wide selection of books on different subjects conveys this impression admirably. Modern books are printed in a reasonably standard and uniform way, but with old antique books, there were several different conventions. A number of them are made public on fancy paper with hand made, uneven edges. Other ones are of bizarre sizes or shapes. Once in awhile, I even find 2nd hand books stuffed with illuminated pages. They make such sundry and colourful eye candy that I just can’t resist the enticement. Even if it is years before I read a book, I will be able to still enjoy having it in my shelf.
